The Petersen Publishing Company (located in Los Angeles) was sold in 1996 to a private equity firm who then sold it to a British media company named EMAP. In 2001 EMAP sold the Petersen magazine product line to Primedia. In 2007 Primedia sold all of its magazine line to Source Interlink Media which publishes magazines from numerous locations around the USA. The publishing team for Motor Trend and other car and motorcycle magazines, for example, is located in the Los Angeles suburb El Segundo.
Robert E. Petersen, the owner of Petersen Publishing, died in Santa Monica, California in 2007.

Petersen Publishing Company was acquired by British publisher Emap in 1998. Emap later sold off some of its assets to other companies, and the remnants of Petersen Publishing were eventually merged into Source Interlink Media in 2007. Source Interlink Media filed for bankruptcy in 2009 and was subsequently acquired by American Media, Inc.
