The lotus that the lotus-eaters ate contained a type of drug. This made the three crew men who ate the lotus very contented, and forgetful of their home land. All three of them wanted to stay and eat lotus forever, and thus had to be dragged back to the ship by Odysseus. Odysseus saved them and they left; they didn't live there forever.
Metaphorically, the lotus represents a type of temptation to live the easy life and give up on the journey.

Most of the suitors ignored Odysseus. Some of the suitors treated him decently as a beggar, giving him some bread and some soup. Some suitors, like Antinuous, abused Odysseus verbally. Antinous threw a footstool at Odysseus.

The Lotus-Eaters were a group of people in Lydia (in Greek mythology) and once people entered their land, then they fed them lotus flowers in which they had a magic bean that made them forget their formal lives. This happened with Odysseus who lost some of his men there. Percy Jackson didn't eat a lotus flower in the book because they were probably mixed in with the cokes and such.
The native lotus eaters happily gave some of the lotus to the three of Odysseus crew who were sent to explore the island. The natives are peaceful and do not attack Odysseus and his crew. They are eventually left behind on the island. I have some waterlilies growing in my koi pond. They will push up a lotus blossom every few months. You will see them come to the surface of the water over the course of a week and finally they will come through the surface When they do this they will open up with the morning sun and remain open all day. Then come evening they will close up for the night. They will do this for about 4-5 days and then sink back down into the pond and not come up again. Hope this helps.
One of the objectives of The Blossom plan was to relate to different religions.
