They were brought back under Persian rule, until they were liberated by the Delian League after Persia's defeat in 479 BCE. However they were brought back under Persian control early in the next century when ongoing fighting between Greek city-states meant that the mainland Greeks could no longer shield them.

The Persians spent six years putting the revolt down. Eretria and Athens sent forces to assist the Ionians and over-reached by burning down the Persian provincial capital of Sardis which brought a Persian punitive expedition on them, turned back by the Athenians and Plataeans at Marathon.
