There are many traditional stories about what happened to the Magi after this, with one having them baptised by St. Thomas on his way to India. Another has their remains found by Saint Helena and brought to Constantinople, and eventually making their way to Germany and the Shrine of the Three Kings at Cologne Cathedral.

John Shelby Spong (A Bishop Rethinks the Birth of Jesus) says that among people he knows in New Testament circles, the universal assumption is that the magi, or wise men, were not actual people. So, once they fulfilled their literary role in Matthew's Gospel, they ceased to exist.

In Matthew 2: 12

And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

The wise men were no longer needed in the nativity story so, apart from returning home, nothing further happened. John Shelby Spong (Born of a Woman: A Bishop Rethinks the Birth of Jesus) says that among people he knows in New Testament circles, the universal assumption is that the magi were not actual people.

The Magi were suspicious of Herod wanting to find the Holy Infant, so went home with out repoting back to Herod.
