French surrender to Nazis also known as Second Armistice took place at Northern French town of Compiegne. This was a deliberate choice of Hitler as Compiegne was the same place where first armistice took place after World War I after Germany's surrender.
Compiegne was the place in France where Germany officially agreed to the armistice that ended the war. It took place in one of the cars in the train belonging to the French general, Foch. In 1940, when Germany defeated France in World War II, Hitler made the French sign their surrender in the same train car that the Germans had surrendered in in 1918 (the French had made it into a memorial). Afterward, Hitler had the train destroyed except for the one car, which was destroyed later as Germany lost that war too.
1940!
== == Compiegne. But it is important to understand that the French did not surrender. They accepted an armistice, which is a fancy word for cease fire. The legal difference between surrender and cease fire had important consequences in how the allies conducted the rest of the war.
