Your body likes to function in a regular predicatable pattern, adjusting to changes so that it remains consistent- this is called homeostasis

when your body gets disrupted whether by stress, loss of sleep, extreme cold, or in this case, a reduction of calories- it will work extra hard to maintain the weight that you had.

SO when you stop eating- your body is starving -and tries to hold on to the fat and calories it has

It does this by SLOWING DOWN your metabolism- you become less energized and your body does not break down as many calories- and the calories you do eat will be more likely stored than burned-

So you can actually gain weight by doing this!

The best approach - Eat a few small balanced meals throughout the day - this will actually speed up your metabolism, keep you energized and aid in losing weight!

BEFORE READING: Please do not try and not eat for 3 weeks, you and the people you know would not be be pleased if you died because you were trying not to eat.

After 3 weeks your body will start craving salt and water.

Because the body works on electrical impulses, if you have no salts in solution or in your system to help transmit signals to your body parts you could lose a portion of your fine motor control, things that take a lot of precision movement and thought. Your body would, essentially, not be able to talk to itself.

You would also begin breaking down muscle NOT FAT. Fat is reserved, even in times of starvation, for last because of the high energy stored within it. You will start eating away at your muscles and fat.

Also, keep in mind that it IS possible ... practicers of the Muslim faith fast for Ramadan every year, most with no ill effects. Fasting can be a spiritual experience, but does not exist without the physical and mental pains of not eating. Proceed with caution.

Your body starts to use the nutrients it has stored in fat, but its also using the nutrients in your muscles. so basically your body is eating itself.
