What happens at the end of the book The Giver?

The end of the giver is not really given to you... Lowry leaves A LOT of room for interpretation in the book. At the end he is at the top of a hill and he sees the sled and the people are waiting for them and Gabe. Many people have told me what they thought the ending was:

He died as all his memories come rushing back and the people (in heaven) are waiting for him

he has found elsewhere

he is hallucinating

OR all of the above together

At the end of "The Giver," Jonas escapes the community with the baby, Gabriel, seeking freedom and a better life elsewhere. They journey through harsh conditions, and it is left ambiguous whether they survive or not as they head towards an uncertain future. The ending implies hope and the possibility of a new beginning.

a lot of people think that Jonas and gabriel die at the end. it is supposed to be left open so you can decide what you think happened. (i personally think that they found the elsewere that they were looking for and did not die) that is my personal opinion. it is supposed to be left open.

if you read further in the series....You will learn that in a schoolhouse there is a "mischievous eight-year-old kid named Gabe, and that the sled that Jonas and Gabe road on in the end became a symbol of courge and hope in Village (which is the setting of the messenger). Also, you find out that Jonas becomes the leader of Village in the novel the messenger because Lois Lowry describes the color of the leaders eyes as, pale piercing grey.
