A dragon terrorized Geatland while Beowulf was king. Beowulf felt it was his duty to defend his people by fighting the dragon so that is what he did. His men, all but Wiglaf, deserted him while he was in need when up in flames. Wiglaf helped Beowulf but before they killed the dragon the dragon had bore his tusks into Beowulf's neck. Once the dragon was killed the wound was overflowing with blood and Beowulf knew he was dying. So in answer, the dragon killed Beowulf by digging his tusks into Beowulf's neck during battle.
If Beowulf didn't die, he would have continued to rule as a strong and noble king over the Geats. He may have faced further challenges and battles, ensuring the safety and prosperity of his people for years to come.
Then he wud be alive.
