Seeds can die for a number of reasons before they become established plants (amongst others):
Drying out, once germination is initiated if the seed dries out it will die.
Mechanical damage, such as an animal or insect eating the newly germinated seedling.
Poor soil conditions, the soil conditions where the seed germinated may not prove adequate for the seedling to reach maturity.
Fungal infections, these are a very common cause of seedling death as the plant is at its most vugrable
If seeds have been stored, they might still germinate if they have not exceeded the time that they are viable. This time varies with different species. If they have been put in soil and they have been given enough time to germinate, but haven't they will not grow.

sprout
When a seed begins to grow/sprout it is known as germination.
Dicots and monocots differ based on how many seed-leaves they have. Monocots only sprout one leaf as a seed, whereas dicots sprout two, or possibly more.
Sprout!Germinate!
I planted ginko seeds and it took about two months.
Just about any seed will sprout with the right conditions.
A sprout is the start of a new plant, usually from a seed.
Photosynthesis is a circle of life that mainly happens to plants. Going from a seed to a sprout to leaves and then to a huge plant then it dies.
