A tendon is the material connecting your muscle to your bone. If torn, the muscle is no longer connected to the bone and thus contracting the muscle does not pull on the bone, meaning no motion occurs.

In addition, it is EXTREMELY painful.

A full tear usually requires reconstructive surgery to fix, but a strain or partial tear will heal naturally over a couple of weeks in a healthy patient. The usual treatment for such occurances is applying a tensor bandage to the area to reduce swelling, and painkillers. For moderate tears of leg tendons, crutches are often used during healing, to prevent further damage and to reduce the need for prescription strength painkillers.
