In extreme cases of stomach cancer, all of the stomach can be removed with the exception of the espohogeal valve and a small portion below it. If this is done, life for the patient can go on relativly normally. The patient will have to eat smaller portions more often, but it does not drastically affect the quality of life. Some people actually have this done in cases of morbid obesity. It is called a radical bypass. The major side effect is extreme weight loss.

What accomodations would you have to make if your stomach is surgically removed?

There are a several accommodations that would have to be made if the stomach was completely removed due to surgery. One accommodation would be eating and taking in liquids through an IV or a tube. Another accommodation would be a major change in diet such as soups, broths, and vitamins. There is, however, a new research project has come up with an artificial stomach that will act just as the previous stomach did.

How much of the large intestine can be removed due to cancer?

Usually, about one fourth to one third of your colon is removed, but more or less tissue may be removed depending on the exact size and location of your cancer. The remaining sections of your colon are then reattached. Nearby lymph nodes are removed at this time as well. Most experts feel that taking out as many nearby lymph nodes as possible is important, but at least 12 should be removed.

Is stomach ulcer heardity problem?

For the most part no. Sometimes stomach cancer can cause ulcers, and this can be somewhat linked to hereditary (though most causes of gastric cancer are environmental). But most cases of gastric ulcers are due to environmental factors. The most common cause of stomach ulcers is a bacterial infection with H. pylori, and this can run in families because they contaminate each other, but it isn't due to heredity. Second most common cause of stomach ulcers is chronic use of NSAIDs, such as ibuprophen. This too is not linked to heredity.
