Depending on the particular university you will usually be required to resit the module in the form of several referrals, these are simply assignments which are (again depending on the university) similar to the one that you failed.
If your lucky you will be able to defer from that particular module meaning you will simply carry on, for me at Liverpool John Moores it depends on the particular module whether or not it is a core module in which case you will need to complete all aspects you failed.
