you become infected by them.in order to survive a anti venom needs to be given or else you die.you need to get yourself treated before you lose too much blood.so when it bites you that blood goes into its venom conductor to help it make the babies.it might take a few minutes or a day maybe 2 to survive depends how much blood you have lost.

Probably nothing. However, what do you mean by 'garden snake' as there are many species that are called 'garden snakes.' All are nonvenomous so there is no danger from that. Treat the wound like any other. Wash well with soap and water, perhaps cleanse it with hydrogen peroxide. You may wish to apply and antibiotic cream or ointment and then bandage it until it heals over.

It is best to identify the snake before attempting to pick it up. While most snakes that might be found in a garden are harmless, it is not unusual in some parts of the world for dangerous venomous snakes to occasionally show up.

Well it's not venemous, so you wouldn't get poisoned. But still, if any snake actually bites you, you should still get it checked out to see if you're infected by something.
