Natural, unassisted births are not uncommon, but births aboard airliners are very rare. If there are complications, the plane may land at the nearest airport, providing it is substantially closer than the original destination, and has equal or better medical facilities.

Two other ramifications:

- unless otherwise requested and a certificate obtained, the baby or babies will be listed as born where the plane lands. For international flights, the UN considers the country of birth to be where the plane is registered, but the citizenship is based on that of the parents and/or the mother.

- the airline may not charge the newborn parents for airfare or infant carry-on fees.
