It will always run cold so it will run inefficiently.
When the car is cold the thermostat is closed. When the thermostat is closed the coolant does not circulate or get in to the engine block.
Raise the front of the car up and support it safely. From underneath, drain the radiator, then remove the lower hose from the engine outlet. Remove the engine outlet, and the thermostat is inside.
the thermostat is mounted on the lower left side of the engine (when faceing the car from the front) Follow the radiator hose and you will find the thermostat housing
When the thermostat in your car fails it usually fails to open which in turn does not allow radiator water to pass through the engine and cool it, so the engine over heats.
The thermostat for a 1984 Lincoln Town Car is under the top hose inlet. The inlet is bolted to the top of the engine and is easy to remove.
Engine hot - normal Engine cool excessive pressure bad thermostat
Open the bonnet, Follow the top coolant hose (On the passanger side of the car) from the radiator to the point where it connects to the engine, The housing that this hose connects too is the housing for the thermostat. Remove the two retaining bolts and the thermostat will be accessible.
The thermostat on your car is hidden. It is not at the end of the upper radiator hose as most car are. Your car should have an exhaust crossover pipe on it either on the d/s or the p/s side of the engine. You will need to remove that crossover pipe to gain access to the thermostat. You will need to remove the thermostat bipass pipe also. I hope this has been helpful. If you have any more questions, you can e-mail me at GMmechanic@gmail.com.
it can start but it won't go far as the engine will "explode" because of the increase of temperature. A thermostat regulates the temperature system of your car.. Usually the engine will run too cold with out a thermostat. That will hurt the efficiency of the engine.
the thermostat is located on the passenger side of the car if you are looking directly at the engine after raising the hood it is on the end of the upper radiator hose in the housing simply remove the two bolts and remove old thermostat and put the new thermostat and rubber gasket in the same way old came out
The thermostat is located on the back side of the engine if you are facing the car. As you face the car, it will be to the passenger side, down under the exhaust manifold. To get to the thermostat, you will have to remove several different bolts. Remove the heat shield on top of the exhaust manifold, three bolts there. Under the engine, you wil see a metal pipe that leads up to the thermostat housing that will have a blt with a wiring clp attached to it, remove that. Then there are the two bolts that hold that pipe up that you wil need to remove then. If you need more info, let me know, I just changed mine.
On a 1985 Lincoln Town Car : Follow the top radiator hose from the radiator to the engine . Where the hose connects to the engine the engine cooling thermostat is inside the housing
