PS3 was designed for the Harddrive to be replaced and what happens is when your done you have more memory.

They actually have a support center for PS3 and they answer this question that has been added to the related link: Can I upgrade the hard disk drive (HDD) inside my PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system?

Note that when the say "Please be advised that if you replace the hard drive, the data that was on the original hard drive will not show up on the PS3 unless you manually back up the data and transfer it to the replacement hard drive "Manually back Up" is a link for you to see the procedures and again when they say: For complete instructions on how to properly upgrade the hard disk drive, see pages 16-18 in the PS3 system "Safety and Support" guide. those quoted words is a link to those procedures at the support center
