In some states you can be issued a summons to appear in court at a specific time, date, and place; and in other states you can be arrested and taken to jail, but often released on your own recognizance or for low bail. Like any other crimes a misdemeanor is punishable by fines, court costs, probation, and/or jail time. In some states some misdemeanors can be punishable by a longer jail/prison sentence than some felonies.
