∙ 16y agoThis is not usual, although for some African-Americans it is normal. Check in with a dentist immediately. Even if you chew tobacco, use drugs or have other health problems, you definitely should be seen ASAP.

∙ 12y agoSometimes but it is mainly due to pigment, just as the same with pigmentation of the skin. It's interesting because chimpanzees, our closest biological relative, have pink gums. Black, purpurple and pink gums are perfectly healthy gums. If you get a change in colour of your gums over the span of your life, then there is a problem!

Blackness of the gums is due to melanin pigmentation, if it is generalised. Restorations of teeth basically silver amalgam restorations if it is overcountoured, impinging on gums also results in blackness of gums, but this would be only localised.

∙ 16y agoIt may be for two reasons:1) your natural color of gums. or 2)from a Mercury filling (Silver filling). Mercury seeps under the gums and thus you see it dark pigmentation.
