Sometimes but it is mainly due to pigment, just as the same with pigmentation of the skin. It's interesting because chimpanzees, our closest biological relative, have pink gums. Black, purpurple and pink gums are perfectly healthy gums. If you get a change in colour of your gums over the span of your life, then there is a problem!
Hi,
Blackness of the gums is due to melanin pigmentation, if it is generalised. Restorations of teeth basically silver amalgam restorations if it is overcountoured, impinging on gums also results in blackness of gums, but this would be only localised.
the reason your gums are black and not pink cause you are not brushing enough brush 3 time a day more of your gums
It may be for two reasons:1) your natural color of gums. or 2)from a Mercury filling (Silver filling). Mercury seeps under the gums and thus you see it dark pigmentation.
Gums can become dark and discolored from gum disease. Gum disease occurs when a person has poor dental hygiene habits.
You can be allergic to the metal posts for false teeth and the gum will turn black from the metal allergy.

Black spots on your gums can most commonly be either amalgam stains, or melanine spots. If you use to have silver fillings, these can cause amalgam stains in the gums when they are removed. If you are a Black or Indian person, or have black ancestors, you might have melanine spots on your gums. It is best to have them checked by a dentist just to make sure it is not something bad.

If your cat's gums have recently turned black it probably has an infection, like gum disease or something. TAKE IT TO THE VET RIGHT AWAY. A cats gums are supposed to be a pinkish red color. If there are any spots of black, like little tiny dots, make an attempt to brush your cats teeth, it might just be food. but if you cats gums are black, don't hesitate to take it to the vet.ADD:Actually, some cats have black colouring/blotches on their gums and the roof of the mouth. This is a completely natural pigment to their mouths. However, if your cat's gums are not usually black and have turned black from a light pink colour then it is advisable to take it to the vet as soon as possible.
