Sometimes but it is mainly due to pigment, just as the same with pigmentation of the skin. It's interesting because chimpanzees, our closest biological relative, have pink gums. Black, purpurple and pink gums are perfectly healthy gums. If you get a change in colour of your gums over the span of your life, then there is a problem!
