Edmund Steppes has written: 'Edmund Steppes (1873-1968)'
A steppe is a region characterised by plains with grass or shrubs but almost no trees. The word is Ukrainian in origin and refers to the region stretching across to eastern Mongolia. However, the American prairies are also steppes. Steppes are often arid - although not quite a desert. They may be denuded of vegetation during parts of the year. They are also subject to extreme variations in temperature. In the Mongolian steppes, day-to-night temperature differences can exceed 30 Celsius degrees.
