They are over powered and imprisoned. Edmund then arranges for Cordelia to be hung. He later repents, sends someone to stop it but is too late causing Lear to carry her body on stage uttering possibly the most difficult line of any play "Howl, howl, howl, howl." To see that line performed perfectly look up the screen version where Ian Holme plays Lear, on of the best adaptations I've seen.
