will be used to make new products. In some cases, entire bales that have been
contaminated by an incorrectly sorted piece of plastic are rejected. This is why proper
sorting is very important.
Recycling is a good alternative to filling up landfills with plastics, but it is not a perfect
solution. It can be expensive to transport and process the plastics for recycling, and
consumers do not yet buy enough recycled materials -those with a high post-consumer
waste (PCW) content-to make up for this cost. Consumers can reduce this cost by
reusing plastics before sending them to the recycling center.
