When Jonas was playing with the apple with his friend, he saw it turn red instead of the usual grayscale with which he saw everything. Of course, he didn't know what 'colour' was, so he couldn't decide what had changed about it. He was beginning to See Beyond.
As a result of Jonas taking an apple in "The Giver," he experiences guilt and shame for breaking a rule in his highly structured society. This act also leads to him questioning the purpose and fairness of the rules set by the community's leaders.
Before Jonas becomes the receiver everything in the community/his world through his eyes are black and white including that significant apple. So therefore after Jonas becomes a receiver his world is in color and the apple is red.
Jonas is singled out by this announcment;"ATENTION TO ALL ELEVENS, RECREATION THINGS ARE TO BE KEPT AT THE RECREATION CENTER AND SNACKS AT THE 'CAFETERIA"

The apple flashed the color of red for a mere second. The color stunned Jonas for his world is in black and white.
Jonas Takes The Apple Home In The Book, The Giver Because While He Was Throwing The Apple, He Saw Something Different About It Which Was That He Was Seeing The Colour Red.
Jonas noticed that the apple's color was different compared to the previous day. It had changed from a dull, matte red to a vibrant, glossy red. This change in the apple's color was one of the first indications to Jonas that he was starting to see things differently after receiving memories from the Giver.
The apple's color was unusual - bright red. Jonas was surprised because he was used to the dull, uniform colors of his community. The fact that the apple was different from the others made him curious and concerned.
