The lungs become black and breathing becomes hard. The lungs are protected by a series of defense mechanisms in different regions of the respiratory tract. When a person breathes in, particles suspended in the air enter the nose, but not all of them reach the lungs. The nose is an efficient filter. Most large particles are stopped in it, until they are removed mechanically by blowing the nose or sneezing.

Inspiration happens when the pressure inside the lungs is lower than the atmospheric pressure (outside) and air rushes into the lungs. Expiration is when the air inside the lungs is higher than the atmospheric pressure and the air rushes out of the lungs. If the intrapleural pressure (pressure within the pleura of the lungs) isn't maintained then the pressure in the lungs can't differentiate between inspiration and expiration and so the lung collapses.
A dusty enviroment can affect our lungs when we breathe it in because the dust particles can get trapped in our lungs which would affect our breathings the particles travel through the the air and we inhale it!
Our lungs are quite sensitive. The blood vessels in the nose warm the air to a temperature close to our own. The moisture is simply secretions designed to trap foreign particles such as pollen and dust - to sopt them reaching the lungs.
I believe the smallest are the alveoli (air sacs), since there are millions of them in the lungs.
