Any plant or animal that depended on the disappearing one for part of its life cycle will move closer to endangerment, until it finds a new ecological niche. If the extinct plant or animal was essential for some part of the life cycle then a second species is likely also go extinct, as not enough individuals are likely to adapt in the space of a few generations.
