∙ 6y agoIf the adjacent cells are empty, then the text in the cell will appear to spill out over them. However that text is not actually contained in those cells. It is still just in the initial cell. If you put the cursor on the first cell and look at the formula bar, you will see all the text in that cell. If you then put the cursor over one of the adjacent cells that the text is spill out over, you will see that the formula bar will show that those cells are actually empty. If you then put something into any of those cells, the text in the original cell will appear to be cut off at the start of the other cell, or what is known as truncated. the proper thing to do is to either widen the column so that the text can be shown or set the Wrap Text option on so that the text will show in the cell. Go to the Format menu and pick Cells and the Alignment and then tick the box beside wrap text.

Each column has a set width when you start. As you type text into different cells, some of that text will be too wide to fit into its cell. Different pieces of text are different widths. If you looked down a column, it would have to be made wide enough to allow the longest piece of text fit in a cell. At the top of each column there is a letter to identify it. If you put the cursor on the dividing line between it and the next column header, the mouse pointer will change to a double arrow. If you then double click it will then find the longest piece of text or other data in the column and adjust the column width so that it fits perfectly into it. If the text is wider than a cell, then the column will widen out to fit it. If it is narrower, the column width will reduce its size to fit it.
