At a destructive plate boundary, one plate is sliding under (sub-ducting) the other. Often, as you can imagine, they sometimes get stuck, and pressure builds up. When this pressure is released, they jolt forwards, causing a disturbance in the sea above. This creates a tsunami in every direction from the earthquake.
