The actual process involved depends on the operating system and type of file system. Sometimes, the operating system does not actually delete the file. It can move the file to a list of deleted files, making it available for recovery within a certain period of time or amount of activity. Usually, files in such a "deleted list" are then actually deleted at some later time based on time in the list and space demands on the file system.
