It goes round and round, faster than all other parts of the Earth. On the equator the land travels 40,000 kilometres in 24 hours.
All other places move more slowly and to find the speed at any point you have to multiply 40,000 kph by the cosine of the latitude, for example at a latitude of 60 degrees the speed is only 20,000 kph. Because of this, any piece of atmosphere that has a tendency to move north under pressure forces will bend to the right as the ground underneath it moves more and more slowly, which is why a high-pressure area (cyclone) causes a clockwise rotation of air. Another explanation of this effect is the Coriolis force.
