When you breathe out, or exhale, your diaphragm relaxes and moves upward into the chest cavity. The intercostal muscles between the ribs also relax to reduce the space in the chest cavity. This is done because the lungs become smaller

When you breathe inwards (inhalation or inspiration) the lungs increases in volume, this is because the intercostal muscles contract moving the ribs upwards and outwards - this combined with the contraction of the diaphragm increases the volume in the thorax and thus the lungs. The pressure of the lungs is lower than that of the outside atmosphere and consequently air rushes inwards - negative pressure breathing.
