Oil starts to leak from the gasket. Generally it doesn't pose a problem to the engine unless you run it out of oil. It does make a mess, however, and they're not that expensive or difficult to replace.

Through the overflow tank. Open the bleeder valve on the thermostat housing, turn heat to high, and pour coolant in the overflow tank until it comes out the bleeder valve.
It could be a bad head gasket or a leaking oil cooler. Doing a compression check should tell if it is a bad head gasket.
If it is like a 1989 saab 9000, you remove the front passenger wheel, remove all the plastic from the wheel well, and the alternator should be rite there. You can also get to it by removing the manifold, which allows much easier access to the alternator, but then you need a new manifold gasket.
