The vehicle will miss or not even start. The sensor picks up the crank and then tells the computer when to inject fuel and when to fire the spark plug. It might sound like the timing is out but its all the sensor.
A crankshaft sensor can go bad if due to an oil leak. If oil breaches the sensor itself it will burn out.
Thermocycling.
Only when it goes bad, in most cases it will not go bad.
it is part of the engine i had go bad
If you have a 4g63 motor a common problem is crankwalk, this will damage or break off the sensor.
what can make a crank shaft sensor keep goin bad even if its been replaced 4 times.. in a 2000 oldsmobile bravada
A bad crankshaft sensor would stop the engine and not restart.
The crank position sensor, sometimes referred to as the crankshaft position sensor, is a small plug found on motor vehicles that monitors the speed at which the crankshaft is rotating. This information is relayed through the vehicle's computer, which then uses it to calculate ignition timing. Crankshaft sensors may go bad because of faulty construction or high mileage on the vehicle.
You more than likely have a bad connection or damaged the CPS when removing the alternator
Just like a old TV Wear and tear, gets old then fails. The sensor stops building voltage potential
It could be possible but very improbable. You need to take it to a repair shop and have it put on a scanner and NOT a code reader, A scanner will direct you in the right direction for a proper repair.
First....use an OEM sensor...1996 Jeep Grand Cherokees have been known to not work properly on non- OEM Crankshaft sensors. Excessive heat can cause it to go bad. Proper installation is critical. Also there is a joint in the wiring from the sensor to the PCM. It can corrode and sometimes cause stalling of the engine whether the engine is cold or hot. PCM could be going bad.
