What are the uses of the horseshoe crab?

I know of no nutritional use, edible (culinary)or otherwise (medicinal), to humans. I do know that each year the horseshoe crabs comes up on beaches to lay thousands of eggs and these eggs and resulting newborn baby crabs provide numerous birds, water fowl and other sea creatures with nutritious meals. Also, as crabs are scavengers, they keep the ocean bottom clean.

How does a Horseshoe Crab protect itself?

The horseshoe crab protects it's self in the water by burrowing deep into the sand to hide. It also usues it's tail to scare away predators. The shell on top protects the fragile insides, on the underneath of the crab. However, if it is flipped over on it's back, it will use it's telson "tail" by digging it into the sand and flipping itself upright. On land the only way the horseshoe crab can protect itself it by staying right side up. If it is flipped over, it cannot flip itself upright on land, and his body parts will be exposed to predators such as birds, and other land crabs. So if you are walking along a beach and find a horseshoe crab on it's back, give it a hand and flip it over.It protects itself by removing the horseshoe on its feet and creating a layer of armor around it's body. The horseshoe gets damaged in the process and must be discarded but just like the starfish it can regrow it's horseshoes and once again walk safely on land.

What has hard shell and stinger?

A creature that has a hard shell and a stinger is a type of crab, specifically the horseshoe crab. Horseshoe crabs have a hard exoskeleton and possess a tail spine, or telson, which can deliver a painful sting, although they are not dangerous to humans. Another example would be certain species of stingrays, which have a hard, flat body and a venomous stinger on their tails.

Has crab gota tail?

Crabs do have a kind of tail - actually their abdomen, similar to the "tail" of a lobster; they keep them out of sight tucked underneath the carapace, visible when you flip them over. Horseshoe crabs have a straight and prominent rigid tails, which they use to flip themselves over if stuck upside-down.

IS a horseshoe crab a crustacean?

A horseshoe crab actually is not a Crustacean. Although it is a crab, it is part of the Subphyla Chelicerate because it has a very small set of appendages just above the mouth called Chelicerae. It is more similar to spiders and other Chelicerates than Crustaceans.

Why do people like horseshoe crabs or dislike horseshoe crabs?

At first a horseshoe crab can look scary, because we associate them with crabs, and they're not like anything we usually encounter. They are completely harmless-although the edges and spikes on their shells can be sharp. They are actually very calm and slow. Their tail is harmless. It's actually a delicate organ for them and loaded with sensors. When horseshoe crabs swim, they steer with their tail. When they are on the beach at the edge of the water, they can get flipped upside-down. They use their tail to flip themselves right side up. Look up how they save the lives of humans every day!

Can a horseshoe crab be dangerous?

No, horseshoe crabs are not dangerous. I use to think the same thing until I found out more about them. Although it does look kind of scary they are harmless. The tail is only used for steering through the sand while underwater and to direct movements. The mouth is located between the legs so if you decide to carry it be gentle because it could pinch you but that's about it.
