Sound waves travel FASTER through water than through air. Since the molecules in water are closer together than the molecules in air, the closeness of these molecules allow sound waves to be carried more efficiently. This is also why sound waves travel fastest in solids because the molecules in solids are tightly packed together, and there is less space in between the molecules. Since there is more space in between the molecules of air, it takes more time for a sound wave to travel.

In addition to the increase in speed, frequency remains unchanged because a change of medium (from air to liquid) does not effect frequency.

The frequency of sound only depends on the source. It doesn't change even when the sound wave travels through different media. Only the speed and wavelength will change. In this case, sound is traveling into a denser medium. So, the speed and the wavelength of the sound wave will increase.

How is sound refracted?

Sound is a wave (of energy) in a medium [solid, liquid, or gas] (a compression wave in fact), therefore it is refracted by any change in the medium AND by the fact that it is never coherent (it never travels in only a straight line).

When a sound wave moves past a point in air what happens to the density of air at this point?

The density of air increases and then decreases as the sound wave passes.

What happens to each water particle as a wave passes through the ocean?

it stay at the surface

What happens to the wavelength of a sound wave when it travels through water rather than air?

the wave length of sound increases

What happens to interstellar gas as it passes through a spiral density wave?

what happens to interstellear gas as it passes through a spiral density wave

When a sound wave passes from air into water do you expect the frequency wavelength to change?

The speed of the wave increases, the frequency remains constant and the wavelength increases. The angle of the wave also changes.

What happens to the matter through which wave passes after the wave is gone?

It will be like it was before

A cork floats on the water as a wave passes by What happens to the cork Will the cork's vibrational frequency be related to the water wave's frequency and if so how?

The cork will move up and down with the wave, since the wave is a transverse wave. I would think that the frequency should be the same as the wave.

Refraction of a sound wave occurs when a wave passes at an angle from one medium into another in which the of the wave is different?

speed

What happens to the speed wavelength and frequency when sound wave passes from cool air into warmer air?

the speed and wavelength increase but the frequency stays the same

When a wave passes a ship at sea how does the wave effect the ship?

the waves travel through water, but they do not carry the water with them. The ship moves up and down as the wave passes under it. The ship does not travel with the wave!

What happens to a sound wave if there are no particles to vibrate?

the sound wave will not make it to the ear drums. you wont hear the sound.
