What results when a coronary circulation is prevented in humans?

The coronary arteries that run on the surface of the heart are called epicardial coronary arteries. These arteries, when healthy, are capable of auto regulation to maintain coronary blood flow at levels appropriate to the needs of the heart muscle. These relatively narrow vessels are commonly affected by atherosclerosis and can become blocked, causing angina or a heart attack.

Compromise of the coronary circulation will reduce blood flow to the cardiac muscles, depriving them of oxygen and nutrients in a condition known as ischemia (Grk. a withholding of blood). Cardiac muslce cells can survive the hypoxic (low-oxygen) conditions for up to 40 to 50 minutes (depending on the individual) but after that they will start to die. The death of cardiac muscle cells due to ischemia is called a myocardial infarction, also known as a heart attack. Dead cardiac muscle cells cannot contract and will destabilize the heart, causing arrythmia and eventually fibrillation. Fibrillation, if not treated immediately with a defibrillator, will result in the stopping of the heart and the death of the individual.

What is most commonly referred to as a heart attack. The area of the heart that is supplied by that vessel will not be perfused adequately. The cardiac muscle will be damaged, fatigued, and may die. The heart will often go into an arrythmia or beat inadequately. If the area of the heart that is affected is substantial it may reulst in death. Often the arteries are not blocked but are resticted. Since the perfusion is reduced the heart will only be affected during strain. This often causes chest pain brought on by exercise or strain known as angina.
