Fresh water flows into the sea at a place called the river delta. Depending on the geography of the delta, over time, the waters mix and the composition of the delta water establishes its unique saline content.

The saline content of the delta is lower than the saline content of the sea and higher than the saline content of the river, which should be zero.

If the salinity is more than a few tenths of a percent, fish will begin dying off and the water as it is will not be fit to drink.
