High frequency wave energy enters the atmosphere; it gets absorbed by matter on earth and in the atmosphere; the energy then is emitted at infrared wavelengths; the infrared waves are two large to pass out of the atmosphere and they are reflected back and trapped in the atmosphere.

It is typified by the heating of a car, light comes in by the windows heats the interior and the heat waves can't escape back out of the window, so the car gets ho9tter than the outside asd heat builds up.

Trapped energy from the sun keeps the earth warm through the greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane absorb the heat radiated up from the earth's surface.

The energy heats up the planet since only some of the heat energy can leave.
