In the ocean, it is seafloor spreading, while on land it forms a rift valley.

There are only rare examples available of two continental plates pulling apart at divergent boundaries, at any point of time. This is so because as the two such plates go apart they give birth to oceanic bottom in between them, so they are not just continental plates. But a current example can be found at the divergence of the African and Arabian plates. The phenomenon has given rise to the Red Sea, which is broadening in width, and the East African Rift farther south.

You get a continental rift. It's basically the same process as a mid-oceanic ridge, but then on a continent.
