There are three phases for most materials. The phases are solid, liquid, and gas. To change from one phase (state) to another, the material must either gain, or lose heat. In the case of changing from solid to liquid this heat is called "Latent Heat of Fusion". In the change from liquid to gas the heat is called "Latent Heat of Vaporization". Latent heats are differant for all materials. The latent heat name is the same for a change in state either "up" (ice to water), or down (water to ice). Water "Evaporates" as it aquires enough heat from it's surroundings to change state from a liquid to a gas. Water freezes at 32*F. while frozen there is no evaporation taking place. However, water can go directly from a solid to a liquid is a process called sublimation. It does not pass through the liquid phase. Eventually all the water will change directly from ice ( a solid) to water vapor (a gas). Some Senior Citiczens that predate clothes dryers will remember when wet clothes were hung outside in temperatures below freezing. They froze solid, and later brought in the house bone dry. The ice simply sublimated directly to gas . If you want to make more money than Bill Gates ever dreamed of do this. Discover/invent a device/method that will allow you to put steam in a high pressure boiler under pressure. The way power plants currently work is by burning fuel in a boiler to make steam. The steam turns a generator and BINGO, you have electricity. Here's the problem; you either have to throw the used steam away and heat new water, or remove the Latent Heant of Vaporization, turn the used steam to water, and use a pump to return the water to the boiler.. In either case you must waste the fuel that it took to make the steam in the first place. Pumps are capable of injecting water in a boiler under pressure. So far, nobody has found a way of putting used steam back in a boiler under pressure. Imagine the whole developed world paying you a royalty so they could save the cost of the fuel that is wasted by turning used steam back to water in order to return it to the boiler.

Liquid transformation in a solid is called freezing.
Liquid transformation in gas, under the boiling point is called evaporation.
Soild transformation in a gas is called sublimation.
