Generally, nothing bad happens, especially if it was purchased in its original packaging. But it is always a good idea to wash any new utensil or kitchen item before using it. Many items, including cups, may have been on display and touched by many people, or they may have accidentally been dropped on the floor, or even exposed to pesticides in the factory where they were made. However, if you forgot to wash the cup, it is highly unlikely that your health will suffer; you can always wash it as soon as you are able to do so.
