Typically your car will run off the battery power from that point. You'll get multiple dash warning lights on, including your battery light. At this point you're running on just the battery power alone so you're lights will dim or go out.
Turn off all un-needed electrical things like the radio and get to a auto store for a new belt or a mechanic to have the belt replaced.
I just did it last night.
There are other symptoms and it depends on other factors like the strength of your battery.
As for what damage it will do, I am not sure.
Second opinion:
If the belt in question is the serpentine belt, as opposed to just the alternator belt, then all accessory devices will not be working. This includes Power Steering and, most importantly, the water pump. Running without the water pump can destroy the engine. Pull over and call a tow truck.
if it is a gas or diesel vehicle just drive it on a regular basis and the alternator in your car will keep it charged.
alternator drive belt?
Yes. If the alternator is dead and you drive the vehicle, all the power is coming from the battery and it will eventually drain completely. Also, if a diode is shorted inside the alternator, that can drain a battery.
if you can't install this particular alternator to this vehicle just BURN YOUR CAR TO THE GROUND you don't deserve to drive
The Special Accessories Drive Shaft...runs from engine to front of vehicle to drive fan, ac pump, alternator etc.
Get the vehicle home or to a garage as soon as possible or you may get stuck on the road.
The instrument cluster will give you a warning, that the vehicle will not start in X amount of miles.
Either drive to your local auto parts store and have them test it in the vehicle or you can remove the alternator and take it to your local auto parts store and they can bench test it for you.
A very good chance the fan ( alternator ) drive belt has broken Depending on what engine is in your vehicle, the water pump has probably stopped turning which will increase the temperature of the engine. Also the alternator will have stopped turning, illuminating the no charge warning light.
You will be ticketed.
What kind of vehicle? If the vehicle was manufactured with a bumper - it must have a bumper on it.
Of course not. Without a working transmission you are going nowhere.
