Bad things. It is criminal, and people can and do go to jail for it. It incurrs substantial penalties and interest charges, along with the tax, which the Gov't is very good at collecting, including offsetting anything you may have coming from them (refunds, Social Security, etc) for the future. You can be certain you will be subject to fairly rigorous scrutiny of past and future years and filings. Obviously, as people don't like or want to pay their taxes, it is something that the system is fairly well set to detect and pursue. (Remember, any W-2 or 1099 they have copies of too).
