usually you will die or have some type of an attack either way it is bad ---------------> not usually the case unless your lungs are being flooded. A coughing reflex is triggered when solid materials contact the respiratory tract to expel foreign objects. However if that fails to clear the material (though it usually does), the particle may fall to the air sacs (alveoli) where it will elicit an inflammatory response in which macrophages clear or encapsulate the particle.

Food enters the lungs on rare occasions, and can be dangerous, or life-threatening. The throat (pharyx). There is a flap of tissue (cartilage) called the epiglottis, its nickname is the guardian of the airways, and it closes the windpipe (trachea) when you swallow. This makes sure no food goes into the lungs. Sometimes, if people eat too fast, talk, or laugh while they are eating, the flap may not close in time and food can go down the trachea, into a bronchus, and into a lung. This happens more often to the right lung than the left, because its bronchial tube is larger and has a more steep angle. The reason for this is because the left lung is slighlty smaller and the bronchial tube is less steep to accomodate the left side of the heart, which is bigger than the right side.

When you breath in air passes through the bronchial tubes. The air the enters the alveoli and then the oxygen is passed through the surrounding capillaries. In the capillaries hemoglobin transfers the oxygen into the blood. The carbon dioxide left behind is then moved back into the alveoli. Once in the oxygen enters the blood the pulmonary artery supplies the blood to the right side of the heart. Then the blood travels through the pulmonary vein to the left side of the heart. Then the heat pumps the oxygenated blood throughout the rest of the body. Then finally you exhale the carbon dioxide from the lungs.

Alveoli ~ the air sacs in the lungs

Capillaries ~ blood vessels

Hemoglobin ~ the red blood protein that allows oxygen to enter the blood

By inhalation, the air enters the lungs where it is exchanged with CO2. The then oxygenated blood can now travel and oxygenate the rest of the body.
