nothing most fuel filters are plumbed to work only one way.
A fuel filter does have a correct way to install it. One end usually has input or there is an arrow on the side showing which way the fuel should flow. If you installed it backwards, I guess it woudl cause undue strain ont he pump trying to force the fuel backwards thru the filter if this is even possible.
That lets you know the fuel comes out that end and in the other end so you don't install it backwards.

If the fuel filter is clogged, or a new filter is installed backwards, it will prevent the fuel from reaching the combustion chamber and prevent the veficle from starting.
What happens is you have a new fuel filter in place.
Drain the fuel from the fuel tank. Remove the fuel line from the fuel filter. Remove the fuel filter plate. Remove the fuel filter retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new fuel filter.
check plugs and wires, and the fuel filter for proper installation. Fuel filters have a directional arrow on them, to indicate which way to install them. If it is in backwards, that can cause fuel starvation and stalling under load, such as when you are accelerating.
Assuming this van is still carbureted, the fuel filter is located inside the fuel line fitting just as it enters the carburetor. It takes a 5/8" wrench to remove the fuel line and a 1" wrench to remove the fitting from the carburetor. Take note of the positioning of the filter so not to install the new one backwards.
Remove the fuel tank fuel line. Drain the fuel from the fuel tank. Remove the fuel filter retaining plate. Remove the fuel filter. Reverse the process to install the new fuel filter.
