Can you install a fuel filter in a 1998 Tahoe in such a way as to lead to premature fuel pump failure?

A fuel filter does have a correct way to install it. One end usually has input or there is an arrow on the side showing which way the fuel should flow. If you installed it backwards, I guess it woudl cause undue strain ont he pump trying to force the fuel backwards thru the filter if this is even possible.

Where is Fuel Filter Locations on 1984 Chevy van g20?

Assuming this van is still carbureted, the fuel filter is located inside the fuel line fitting just as it enters the carburetor. It takes a 5/8" wrench to remove the fuel line and a 1" wrench to remove the fitting from the carburetor. Take note of the positioning of the filter so not to install the new one backwards.
