Vaginal infections and Toxic shock syndrome (TSS).

Tampons effect the vagina in multiple ways;

  • Gives bacteria the perfect environment in which to multiply.
  • Effects vaginal pH, allowing growth of more harmful bacteria.
  • Prevents the vagina from cleaning out bacteria and toxins.
  • Dries-out vaginal tissues causing ulcerations.
  • Can contain harmful chemicals and toxins.

The longer a tampon is left in place the longer harmful bacteria has to multiply - thus higher the risk of TSS and vaginal infections. If you can go over 4-6 hours without leaking it also means you're using too high an absorbency, thus causing increased ulceration in vaginal walls which also increases TSS risk.

Two risks of leaving tampons too long:

  • Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).
  • Vaginal infections like Bacterial Vaginosis.

TSS typically occurs within the first few hours of tampon use - if the bacteria responsible are present and producing TSST-1 toxins, and if you lack immunity to those toxins, then they will have immediate impact on your immune system. Leaving tampons in too long allows higher levels of bacteria and bacterial toxins building-up so higher risk of TSS, but chances are if you've gone for 12 days without contracting TSS then you're not at risk on this occasion. Watch for symptoms of TSS such as high fever and low blood pressure, if you see these symptoms seek immediate medical attention.

Vaginal infections are very common with tampon use and leaving tampons in for 12 days significantly increases change of contracting a vaginal infection like Bacterial Vaginosis as bacteria have been allowed to multiply within your vagina for so long. Watch for symptoms such as bad odour, excessive discharge, or other changes to discharge such as changes to colour or texture - if you see these symptoms see your doctor for tests and treatment.

Tampons should be changed every 4-6 hours - the longer tampons are left the greater the risks of vaginal infections such as Bacterial Vaginosis or the risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS).

Tampons allow bacterial growth while preventing vaginal cleaning so the longer tampons are left the longer bacteria are allowed to multiply, and they do so exponentially so even a few extra hours can make a big difference when it comes to health risks. If you can go over 4-6 hours without leaking it would also imply you're wearing too high an absorbency which means more damage is caused to the vaginal tissues, this allows bacterial toxins responsible for TSS direct access to the bloodstream.

Tampons have several effects on vaginal health:

  • Provide bacteria with the perfect environment to multiply.
  • Prevent vagina from cleaning out harmful bacteria.
  • Keep flow in contact with vagina, which effects pH.
  • Dry-out vaginal tissues causing ulceration.

The longer you leave a tampon the longer you're allowing bacteria to multiply, they do so exponentially and while preventing vaginal cleaning it allows harmful bacteria to thrive so increasing risks of TSS and vaginal infection. If you can go over 4-6 hours without leaking it also implies you're using too high an absorbency so it will cause more damage to vaginal tissues, which also increases TSS risk.

After a day bacteria levels will be very high, when you remove the tampon the vagina can start to clean out bacteria, readjust pH, and heal - if the vagina is healthy it should be able to right itself, you may notice bad odour for a few days. It is however more likely that you will experience a vaginal infection, the odour will continue for longer and you may notice unusual discharge - if this occurs then you should see your doctors for tests and treatment.

Tampons need to be changed every 4-6 hours to remain hygienic and reduce risks of vaginal infections or toxic shock syndrome. Tampon companies say 8 hours maximum but this is too long to leave a tampon and if you can go this long without leaking you're using too high an absorbency.

If you leave a tampon too long be sure to remove it and use pads for the rest of that cycle. Be sure to watch for symptoms of vaginal infections such as bad smelling or excessive discharge, and symptoms of TSS such as high fever and low blood pressure. If you see worrying symptoms then seek medical attention via your doctor, or if you see symptoms of TSS then go to hospital.

The longer a tampon is left the longer bacteria are allowed to multiply, and they do so exponentially, also if you can go that long without leaking then chances are your flow wasn't heavy enough for a tampon which also increases risks of TSS. Leaving tampons in so long means a higher risk of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) so firstly watch for symptoms of low blood pressure and high fever, if you see these symptoms go straight to hospital. Leaving tampons in so long also increases risks of vaginal infections such as Bacterial Vaginosis, if you see symptoms such as excessive smelly discharge see your doctor.

Leaving tampons in too long increases risks of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) and vaginal infections such as Bacterial Vaginosis, in some cases vaginal infections can lead to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.

Tampons provide bacteria the perfect place to multiply - and they do so exponentially - while also preventing the vagina from cleaning-out that bacteria and from fighting against bacterial growth. Bacteria can thus lead to a vaginal infection, but if certain strains of bacteria are present they can find their way into your bloodstream and along with the toxins they produce result in you developing TSS.

Tampons give bacteria the perfect place to multiply within the vagina, and prevent the vagina from cleaning itself, the longer a tampon is left the longer bacteria are allowed to multiply and they do so exponentially. Leaving a tampon in too long thus risks vaginal infections such as Bacterial Vaginosis and more serious risks such as the risk of developing Toxic Shock Syndrome. Tampons always pose health risks but misuse such as leaving over 4-6 hours will increase the risks even further.

Not a good idea. Tampons can cause a bacterial infection called toxic shock. It can kill you. Even on your period you need to be careful of wearing a tampon too long.

Is it possible to put a tampon too far in?

No, it's not possible to push a tampon in too far.The vagina is only a few inches in length and at the top of the vaginal canal is the cervix which will prevent the tampon from going any further. A tampon thus can go no further than your vaginal canal as there's nowhere else for it to go, the vaginal canal is essentially a dead end. You can only push the tampon in so far with your finger or an applicator too as it won't reach any further.

Can you die trying to put a tampon in?

No, you cannot die putting a tampon in - unless something happens to occur during tampon insertion, such as if a plane crashes into your house. In some cases when inserting tampons you can hit the vegus nerve which can cause you to pass out, so it is best to be sitting down just to be safe as if you were to pass out there is a risk of hitting your head - I've never known this happen, let alone someone dying as a result, but I suppose it's possible. Obviously tampons are associated with toxic shock syndrome which can be fatal due to major organ failure.

What should you do if you have the urge to pee all the time possibly because you left a tampon in for too long?

A feeling of needing to urinate more frequently has nothing to do with leaving a tampon in your vagina - leaving a tampon in too long can cause vaginal infections, but not urethral infections. If you suspect that you have left a tampon in feel around the vaginal canal to check, if still unsure you need to see your doctor for them to check. If you suspect you have a urinary tract infection (which would explain your needing to urinate more frequently) then you need to see your doctor for this too.
