When all the coolant in the radiator and coolant tank heats up the volume will increase and force it's way through the weakest point which would probbaly be the cap on the recovery tank - if you have filled the recovery tank to the maximum you had better take half of it out.

When you shut your car off, and the engine cools, a vacuum is created by the decrease in temperature, which sucks the coolant from the plastic 'over-flow' tank, back into the radiator. This is the 'recovery' process. Most vehicles from the mid 1970's, possibly even earlier, have had some form of a coolant recovery system.
