If you don't want your mate to die, find a hare and walk near it. Your mate should kill and eat it. Alternatively, try the same near an elk carcass.
Be warned: sometimes while on low health, your mate might walk endlessly in any direction and continue doing so even if they reach the invisible barrier. This is a known glitch/bug. If this happens, try saving and reloading or howling to break this behaviour. If problems persist, allow the mate to die and see if things improve when they respawn.
