Because Americans had fought for their independence from Britain, most of them disliked the idea of colonization.
There have been wars in Ireland, most notably the War of Independence and the Irish Civil War, both of which happened in the 1920s.
After independence, most African colonies were not able to retain the high standard of living that they enjoyed under Colonialism and quickly became poor. If they had remained colonies, this probably wouldn't have happened.
