batteries are stored energy, nothing should have happened. They say to disconnect the negative terminal for safety reasons.
To remove the alternator on 1988 Honda CRX the negative battery must first be disconnected. The belt needs to be loosen and the mounting bolts need to be removed as well. When unmounted the alternator will slide off, and a new unit can be replaced.
A/C Won't Work After Alternator ReplacementEither this is an unusual coincidence, OR the person changing the alternator inadvertently disconnected some of the A/C wiring [like a harness connector], OR damaged one the wires in the A/C circuit. The A/C compressor has a wire to supply current to it to engage the A/C clutch, and if that wire is disconnected, cut or broken, then the A/C clutch cannot engage.
It just happened to me a couple days ago..I found that my alternator belt broke and had to be replaced.
The regulator is in the engine computer not the alternator.
The computer only resets when the battery is removed. The alternator just charges the battery, so if the battery is left connected when the alternator is replaced, the computer should not reset.
Inside the alternator, some are easily replaced and some are soldered in place.
We replaced the alternator on 2 different vehicles. It was around $175 for each.

If the battery is sulfated (or otherwise faulty) to such an extent that it calls for a continuous charge, the alternator never gets a chance to switch off. With the resposibilitiy to run continuously the alternator overheats and eventually fails. Never replace a faulty alternator without also checking the battery.
In most cases an alternator will last well over 100,000 miles
The best I can recommend is to check the alternator. This did happen to me on another car. When I replaced the alternator it started working fine again and now have 164000mi on it when it happened at 103000mi.
