Under the command of Union General David Hunter, General Benham was relieved of duty for his unsuccessful assault on Charleston in 1862. Generals Hunter and Benham failed to properly communicate and thus the Confederates repulsed Benham's assault at the Battle of Secessionville in 1862. Historians claim that if the Union was victorious in this battle, the consequences for the South would have been a severe blow to their war efforts.
